Japan Autumn Leaves 2026: Match Your Dates to the Right City
I used Weathernews’s 2026 forecast dates to pick where to go for each stretch of the season. If your trip falls in the last weeks of October, the place to go from Tokyo is Nikko.
This page contains affiliate links. I may earn a commission if you book or sign up through them (Viator, Klook, Sakura Mobile), at no extra cost to you.
Your dates in Japan are fixed, and the leaves will not move to meet them. I wrote this page for that trip. This guide to Japan autumn leaves 2026 sticks to places you can reach from Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka without adding a night somewhere else.

Japan Autumn Leaves 2026: Where to Go on Your Dates
Tap your dates to see where to go and where the forecast comes from

The peak dates are not mine; they come from Weathernews, which publishes the forecast. What I picked is where to go for each set of dates. The Japan Weather Association’s first forecast on tenki.jp (in Japanese), released October 1, 2026, says “This year’s peak autumn color is expected to be about average or later than average nationwide” (my translation of the Japanese release). Weathernews’s latest release (in Japanese) is dated October 8, 2026.
In Japan from late October to early NovemberFrom Tokyo, go to Nikko
Weathernews (latest release: October 8, 2026) gives October 23 as the forecast peak date for Irohazaka (Tochigi page; checked October 13, 2026).
The Nikko City Tourism Association gives its own peak estimate as “mid-October to early November” (updated September 13, 2026; my translation).
In Japan in mid-NovemberFrom Tokyo, go to Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi
Weathernews (latest release: October 8, 2026) gives November 15 as the forecast peak date for both Lake Ashi in Hakone and the Lake Kawaguchi shore (Kanagawa page and Yamanashi page; checked October 13, 2026).
In Japan in late NovemberArashiyama in Kyoto, or Minoh in Osaka
Weathernews (latest release: October 8, 2026) gives November 24 as the forecast peak date for Arashiyama in Kyoto and November 25 for Minoh in Osaka (Kyoto page and Osaka page; checked October 13, 2026).
The forecast dates for Tofuku-ji, Eikando and Nanzen-ji are on the same Kyoto page.
In Japan in early DecemberTokyo’s gardens, starting with Rikugien and its special evening viewing
Weathernews (latest release: October 8, 2026) gives December 4 as the forecast peak date for Rikugien (Tokyo page; checked October 13, 2026).
Both forecasters update their dates. The dates above are what I saw on October 13, 2026, so reopen the source pages (all in Japanese) the week you go.

Kyoto: The 7:30 Gate or the Evening Entry
Pick the hour before you pick the place

7:30 a.m. At Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama, special early-morning entry starts at 7:30 from November 14 (Sat) to November 30 (Mon), 2026 (garden entrance only; the north gate entrance opens at 8:30 a.m.). On an ordinary day the garden opens at 8:30. Kyoto in leaf season is crowded. Tofuku-ji says so itself in its official notice: “Heavy crowds are expected during the autumn special opening period” (my translation). So pick the hour before you pick the place. The morning gate, or the evening entry.
Arashiyama: Start at Tenryu-ji at 7:30 a.m.
Tenryu-ji’s garden costs ¥500 for high school students and older (2026, priced in yen) and is normally open 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. (Tenryu-ji official site, in Japanese). Weathernews’s forecast peak date for Arashiyama is November 24 (Kyoto page; checked October 13, 2026), which falls inside the early-morning entry period.
Eikando: Day Entry and Night Entry Are Separate
Eikando’s autumn exhibition of temple treasures runs November 11 (Wed) to December 6 (Sun), 2026. Entry is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (gates close at 5 p.m.), and general admission is ¥1,500. The night illumination runs November 20 (Fri) to December 6 (Sun), with entry from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (gates close at 9 p.m.), at ¥1,000 for junior high school students and older (Eikando’s official visitor information, in Japanese).
To walk the garden in daylight, be at the gate by 4 p.m. If you reach Kyoto in the afternoon, aim for the 5:30 p.m. evening entry. Eikando’s notice reads “Please refrain from coming by private car” (my translation; Eikando’s official special page).
Tofuku-jiThe official notice says “November 14 to December 6” with no year on it, so confirm the dates on the official page before you go
Tofuku-ji’s notice says its autumn visiting dates and hours change every year. Tsutenkyo Bridge is open 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.; in autumn, Tsutenkyo and Kaisando cost ¥1,000 for adults, and the Honbo Garden costs ¥600 from November 1, 2026 (Tofuku-ji official site, in Japanese; checked October 13, 2026).
On your own, all you pay is the temple admission (priced in yen). If you would rather hand the route to someone else, there is a private autumn tour that covers Nanzen-ji, Eikando and Ginkaku-ji. The forecast dates for Eikando and Nanzen-ji are on Weathernews’s Kyoto page.
Viator’s product page lists it from ¥17,600 (the “From” price, as of October 13, 2026). That changes with the date, the group size, the currency you pay in and your card’s exchange rate. The product is listed in English. Check the booking screen for the days it runs and for whether temple admission is included in the tour price.
Three Kyoto temples with a guide: Nanzen-ji, Eikando and Ginkaku-ji. From ¥17,600 (Viator’s listed price)

Tokyo: A Weeknight or a Weekend Day
Rikugien, Shinjuku Gyoen and the Jingu Gaien ginkgo avenue

At 6 p.m., Rikugien’s special evening viewing begins. It runs from November 25 (Wed) to December 6 (Sun), 2026. If your trip missed Kyoto, Tokyo still has dates left.
Rikugien: ¥300 by Day, ¥1,000 in Advance at Night
By day the garden is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and general admission is ¥300. The special evening viewing runs 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (last entry 7:30 p.m.), at ¥1,000 in advance (online only) or ¥1,200 on the day. Tickets are limited, and the on-sale date has not been announced (as of October 13, 2026; Rikugien’s official notice, in Japanese). Weathernews’s forecast peak date is December 4 (Tokyo page; checked October 13, 2026), which lands in the second half of the evening viewing period.
Shinjuku Gyoen: Be at the Gate by 4 p.m.
From October 1 to March 14 the garden is open 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with last entry at 4 p.m. General admission is ¥500 (2026, priced in yen). It closes on Mondays (the next weekday when Monday is a holiday), so it is open on Saturdays and Sundays (Shinjuku Gyoen official site, in Japanese). Its forecast date is on the same Weathernews Tokyo page as Rikugien’s.
The Gaien Ginkgo Avenue: Check the Forecast Date First
For the ginkgo avenue at Meiji Jingu Gaien, check the forecast date on Weathernews’s Tokyo page. The ginkgo festival and the illumination have not been announced for 2026 (as of October 13, 2026).
The choice comes down to three. On a weeknight in Tokyo, Rikugien after dark. On a Saturday or Sunday in daylight, Shinjuku Gyoen. The Gaien avenue, once you have seen the forecast date.

Day Trips From Tokyo and Osaka
Minoh from Osaka; Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi from Tokyo

Walk out of the ticket gate at Hankyu Minoh Station and the falls are 2.7 km away. From there, you just walk.
From Osaka: Minoh, on Foot From the Station to the Falls
Minoh’s maple festival, Momiji Matsuri, runs November 14 (Sat) to December 6 (Sun), 2026. The illumination is on from sunset until 9:30 p.m. (Minoh Tourism Association, in Japanese). Weathernews’s forecast peak date is November 25 (Osaka page; checked October 13, 2026). The association updates its color report every Friday, so if you are going on a Saturday you can read it the night before.
From Tokyo: Hakone or Lake Kawaguchi
Weathernews’s forecast peak date is November 15 for both Lake Ashi in Hakone and the Lake Kawaguchi shore (Kanagawa page and Yamanashi page; checked October 13, 2026).
Two options make sense here. If you want to ride the Hakone Ropeway, pick Hakone. If you want to get out to Lake Kawaguchi, pick Lake Kawaguchi. Both are one-day Mt. Fuji tours, not tours built around the leaves. Check the booking screen for the days they run. Klook lists its prices in US dollars (the “From” price, as of October 13, 2026), and what you pay changes with the exchange rate and your card.
Can’t decide? Take Hakone. It has the lower listed price of the two and comes with the ropeway ticket (as stated in Klook’s product name).

If Your Dates Miss the Peak: Earlier and Later Spots
Earlier: Nikko. Later: Tokyo’s gardens

“In autumn-leaf season and the like, traffic on Irohazaka often ‘does not move at all.'” That is the Nikko City Tourism Association, on its traffic and congestion page (in Japanese; my translation). Even so, if October is the only time you are in Japan, the place to go from Tokyo is Nikko.
Early Dates: Nikko From Tokyo, While It Is Still October
Weathernews’s forecast peak date for Irohazaka is October 23 (Tochigi page; checked October 13, 2026). The forecast date for Lake Chuzenji is on the same page. As of October 11, the Nikko City Tourism Association reports Ryuzu Falls as “starting to peak” (the association’s autumn leaves report; my translation). Build the time you will sit in traffic on the slope into your return.
Late Dates: Tokyo’s Gardens on the First Weekend of December
If you are still in Japan on the first weekend of December, go to Rikugien. The forecast source, the evening viewing dates, the opening hours and the prices are in the Tokyo section.

Getting Around and Where to Sleep in Peak Weeks
The pages to open before you leave, and how to decide on a night in Kyoto

There are two pages to open the night before you go.
- Color on the ground: for Kyoto, Kyoto Kanko Navi’s “Momiji Dayori” leaf report (in Japanese) (the 2026 survey is scheduled to start October 30). For Nikko, the Nikko City Tourism Association; for Minoh, the Minoh Tourism Association, updated every Friday.
- The venue’s official page: for the time entry closes. Confirm here any dates posted without a year, like Tofuku-ji’s.
Stay the Night, or Make It a Day Trip?
What decides it is the hour you need to be in Kyoto. If you are aiming for Tenryu-ji at 7:30 a.m., or staying until Eikando’s gates close at 9 p.m., decide first whether to spend the night in Kyoto. If daytime entry is all you need, plan it as a day trip.
Moving by Shinkansen? The nationwide Japan Rail Pass is for people who entered Japan with “Temporary Visitor” status; foreign residents of Japan on any other status cannot pick one up or exchange a voucher for one. The JR Pass page at the end of this section works out whether it pays off for your route.
Getting into Kyoto the night before? The Where to Stay guide helps you pick which station to sleep near.
