What Is the Japan Rail Pass?

01
What Is the Japan Rail Pass?
The JR Pass explained in 60 seconds

The Japan Rail Pass is an unlimited-ride rail ticket sold exclusively to foreign tourists visiting Japan. It covers the vast majority of JR (Japan Railways Group) trains nationwide — including most Shinkansen services, limited express trains, and local JR lines. One pass, valid for 7, 14 or 21 consecutive days, can replace dozens of individual tickets across a multi-city itinerary.

The pass is issued by the six regional JR companies jointly. It is not valid on private railways (Kintetsu, Hankyu, Tobu etc.) or the Nozomi/Mizuho Shinkansen — but for a Tokyo–Kyoto–Hiroshima–Fukuoka route it covers almost everything you need.

What Does the Japan Rail Pass Cover?

03
What Does the Japan Rail Pass Cover?
Shinkansen lines, JR local, buses & ferry

Shinkansen Coverage

The Japan Rail Pass is valid on the following Shinkansen lines — with the critical exception of Nozomi and Mizuho trains:

Line Route Pass Valid?
Tokaido Shinkansen Tokyo → Nagoya → Kyoto → Osaka ✓ Hikari / Kodama only
Sanyo Shinkansen Osaka → Hiroshima → Hakata (Fukuoka) ✓ Hikari / Sakura / Kodama
Tohoku Shinkansen Tokyo → Sendai → Morioka → Shin-Aomori ✓ All services
Hokkaido Shinkansen Shin-Aomori → Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto ✓ All services
Joetsu Shinkansen Tokyo → Niigata ✓ All services
Hokuriku Shinkansen Tokyo → Nagano → Kanazawa → Tsuruga ✓ All services
Kyushu Shinkansen Hakata → Kumamoto → Kagoshima-Chuo ✓ All services
Nozomi / Mizuho Fastest services on Tokaido-Sanyo ✗ NOT covered
Nozomi restriction: Nozomi trains run every 10 minutes and are the fastest option Tokyo–Osaka (2h30m vs Hikari’s 2h52m). Hikari runs roughly every 30 minutes. In practice this is a minor inconvenience — plan around the timetable and you lose very little time.

How to Buy the Japan Rail Pass

05
How to Buy the Japan Rail Pass
Step-by-step: purchase, collect & activate

Step 1 — Purchase Online (Before or After Arrival)

1

Purchase on Klook

Select your pass type (7/14/21-day, Ordinary or Green Car). Complete payment. You will receive a QR code e-ticket immediately by email — no postal delivery required.

2

Go to a JR Ticket Office in Japan

After arriving in Japan, visit any staffed JR ticket office (緑の窓口 / Midori-no-madoguchi) — located at all major JR stations and airports. Show your QR code and passport. Staff will exchange it for your physical JR Pass.

3

Set Your Activation Date

You do not have to activate the pass on the day you collect it. You can set an activation date up to 30 days after purchase. If you arrive in Tokyo but your Shinkansen journey starts in 2 days, activate then.

4

Use the Staff Gates (Not the IC Card Turnstiles)

Never insert your JR Pass into the automatic turnstile — it will be swallowed and damaged. Always use the wide staffed gate. Show your pass to the attendant. This applies at every station including Shinkansen platforms.

5

Make Free Seat Reservations

Your JR Pass entitles you to unlimited free seat reservations on reserved-seat Shinkansen and limited express trains. Visit any JR ticket counter and request your desired train and seat. On busy periods (Golden Week, Obon, New Year) reserve as early as possible.

Japan Rail Pass — Frequently Asked Questions

08
Japan Rail Pass — Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions answered
Is the Japan Rail Pass worth it in 2026?
For most visitors doing a Tokyo–Kyoto–Osaka–Hiroshima route, the 7-day JR Pass pays for itself on the round-trip Shinkansen alone. A Tokyo→Osaka Shinkansen costs around ¥13,870 one-way; the 7-day JR Pass is ¥50,000. If you plan 2–3 long-distance Shinkansen journeys it breaks even easily. Shorter trips or Tokyo-only stays usually do not break even — use IC card instead.

How much does the Japan Rail Pass cost in 2026?
Current 2026 prices: 7-day Ordinary ¥50,000 / Green ¥70,000. 14-day Ordinary ¥80,000 / Green ¥113,000. 21-day Ordinary ¥100,000 / Green ¥143,000. Children (6–11) pay exactly half price. Prices are set by JR Group and are the same everywhere.

Where can I buy the Japan Rail Pass?
You can buy the JR Pass via Klook (instant e-ticket, most convenient), through JR-affiliated authorized agents overseas, or at JR ticket offices inside Japan (same price — no discount for buying in Japan). Klook is recommended for the instant QR delivery and no postal waiting.

Does the Japan Rail Pass cover the Nozomi Shinkansen?
No — the JR Pass does not cover Nozomi or Mizuho services. You must use Hikari, Sakura, or Kodama trains instead. Hikari reaches Kyoto and Osaka on the same Tokaido-Sanyo line and is only about 20–30 minutes slower. In practice this is a very minor inconvenience.

How do I activate the Japan Rail Pass?
Visit any staffed JR ticket office (Midori-no-madoguchi) in Japan with your passport and JR Pass exchange order (or QR code from Klook). Staff will issue your physical pass and set the activation start date. You can choose any date up to 30 days from your purchase date — you do not need to activate on the day you collect it.

Can I buy the Japan Rail Pass inside Japan?
Yes — since October 2023, the JR Pass is available for purchase inside Japan at major JR ticket offices. The price is identical to overseas purchase. There is no financial advantage to buying inside Japan; buying via Klook before arrival saves time on arrival day.

What is the difference between Ordinary and Green Car?
Green Car (グリーン車) is Japan’s first class — wider reclining seats, more legroom, quieter carriage, dedicated overhead racks. Ordinary Car is standard class, comfortable for all journey lengths. Green Car costs roughly 40% more. For most tourists, Ordinary is perfectly comfortable even on 3-hour Shinkansen journeys.

Your Japan Rail Pass Action Plan

Step 1 — Decide your itinerary and check the break-even calculation in Section 04 to confirm the JR Pass is worth it for your route.

Step 2 — Buy your JR Pass on Klook before departure — you will receive a QR e-ticket instantly. No postal delivery needed.

Step 3 — On arrival in Japan, head to the JR ticket office at the airport (Narita/Haneda/KIX) to collect and activate your pass.

Step 4 — Make seat reservations at the ticket counter for Shinkansen journeys — free and unlimited with your JR Pass.

Step 5 — Pair your JR Pass with a Japan eSIM from Klook or Sakura Mobile for seamless navigation between stations.
