What the Michelin Green Guide is — 36 starred sights in Osaka, Kobe and Himeji

This is the Michelin Green Guide (Le Guide Vert), which rates destinations rather than restaurants. The Japan edition is published in France: the 4th edition in 2015, the 6th in 2020, and the current one in 2025. Every star below is given with the edition that awarded it.

The 2015 edition makes the city of Osaka itself two-star. Unlike Kyoto or Nara, its stars sit not on temples but on entertainment districts, observation decks, an aquarium and museums. Himeji and Kobe are 30 minutes to an hour away by shinkansen or JR, so the efficient shape is to sleep in Osaka and day-trip out. For the observation decks and Osaka Castle in the city, a pass bundling entry with transport is worth pricing up.

Three-star Himeji Castle, and Engyo-ji on Mt. Shosha

Himeji Castle is three-star in the 2015 edition. It became, with Horyu-ji, one of Japan’s first World Heritage sites in 1993, and its Edo-period keep is a National Treasure. The white plaster walls earn it the name “White Heron Castle”, and the Heisei restoration completed in 2015 returned that whiteness. The stairs to the top floor are steep, and you carry your shoes with you — a bag helps.

West of the castle, the Japanese garden Koko-en and the Himeji City Museum of Art are one-star. North of the city, Engyo-ji on Mt. Shosha is one-star as well: a ropeway lifts you to a mountainside of large wooden halls. From Himeji Station, the castle is about a 20-minute walk straight up Otemae-dori.

Kita and Minami — Dotonbori, the Umeda Sky Building, bunraku

In Minami, the southern entertainment district, the 2015 edition gives two stars to the Dotonbori area and to Dotonbori itself, with Hozenji Yokocho and its moss-covered Fudo statue, and the National Bunraku Theatre, at one star. Bunraku puppet theatre is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list, and subtitles and audio guides make it workable for visitors. Walk Dotonbori at night, when the signs along the canal are lit.

In Kita, the view from the Umeda Sky Building is two-star and the building itself one-star. Its Floating Garden Observatory bridges two towers in mid-air and looks out over the city and the Yodo River. On Nakanoshima, the Museum of Oriental Ceramics and its ceramics collection are one-star.

The three-star view from Abeno Harukas, plus Osaka Castle and the Aquarium

Newly listed in the 2015 edition, Abeno Harukas 300 is one-star and the view from it three-star. The 300 m tower opened in 2014, and on a clear day the top-floor deck reaches Osaka Bay and the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge. The usual play is to go up before sunset and stay for the night view. At its foot, in Tennoji and Shinsekai, the bath complex Spa World is one-star.

Osaka Castle, the castle grounds and the adjacent Osaka Museum of History are one-star. The present keep was rebuilt in 1931 and houses a museum on the castle and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. On the waterfront, the Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is two-star, built around a Pacific tank with whale sharks and recreating the seas of the Pacific Rim. Osaka Bay is one-star.

Kobe — the Nanban paintings at the City Museum, Kitano and Nunobiki

In the 2015 edition Kobe is one-star, and the Kobe City Museum in the former foreign settlement, together with its collection of Nanban paintings, is two-star. Those paintings record the 16th and 17th-century encounters with Portuguese and Spanish traders — the origin story of the port city.

Up the hill, Kitano and the Western houses Yamate Hachiban-kan and the Choueke House are one-star: the homes foreigners built along these slopes from the Meiji era on. The view from the Nunobiki Herb Garden, reached by ropeway, is one-star too. On the shore, Tadao Ando’s Hyogo Prefectural Museum of Art and the Disaster Reduction and Human Renovation Institution, which tells the story of the 1995 Kobe earthquake, are one-star.

Kinosaki Onsen, Takarazuka, Awaji — and model routes

Kinosaki Onsen, in northern Hyogo, is two-star in the 2015 edition, with the view from Mt. Daishi, reached by ropeway, at one star. Seven public bathhouses are spread along a willow-lined river, and the way to do Kinosaki is to walk between them in the yukata and geta your inn lends you. It is about 2 hours 40 minutes from Osaka on the Kounotori limited express.

Also one-star: Takarazuka and the Osamu Tezuka Manga Museum, and, on Awaji Island, Tadao Ando’s lotus-pond temple Honpuku-ji (the Water Temple).

Shin-Osaka to Himeji is about 30 minutes on the Sanyo Shinkansen, and Kobe (Sannomiya) about 20 minutes by JR special rapid. The limited express to Kinosaki is JR too. Himeji, Kobe and Kinosaki all connect on JR alone, which makes this good Japan Rail Pass territory.
