What the Michelin Green Guide is — 19 starred sights in Takayama and Shirakawa-go

This is the Michelin Green Guide (Le Guide Vert), which rates destinations rather than restaurants. The Japan edition is published in France: the 4th edition in 2015, the 6th in 2020, and the current one in 2025. Every star below is given with the edition that awarded it.

The 2015 edition makes Takayama and Shirakawa-go three-star. Takayama is a mountain town that prospered as territory held directly by the shogunate, and its merchant streets survive intact. Shirakawa-go is a village of steep thatched gassho houses, inscribed as World Heritage in 1995. The bus between them takes about 50 minutes, so the standard shape is to sleep in Takayama and day-trip to Shirakawa-go. Nagoya to Takayama is about two and a half hours on the Hida limited express. If you are combining Hida with Hokuriku by rail, an area pass is worth pricing.

Three-star Takayama — Sanmachi, the Festival Floats Hall, the Kusakabe House

The heart of Takayama is Sanmachi, the old quarter east of the Miyagawa, two-star in the 2015 edition. Sake brewers and miso shops occupy the latticed townhouses, and breweries with a cedar ball above the door pour tastings. A morning market runs daily along the river with vegetables, pickles and woodwork (listed, no stars).

The Takayama Festival Floats Hall, showing the floats pulled at the spring and autumn festivals, is two-star; the Takayama Festival float procession is on the UNESCO intangible heritage list. The Meiji-era merchant houses Kusakabe and Yoshijima are one-star, worth entering for their soaring beamwork, as is the Takayama Museum of History and Art. Note that the Hirata Kinenkan, one-star in the 2015 edition, has closed.

Three-star Shirakawa-go — Ogimachi and the Shiroyama lookout

Shirakawa-go is three-star in the 2015 edition, with Ogimachi, where the gassho houses cluster, and the view from the Shiroyama lookout above the village at two stars. The Wada House, which you can go inside, Myozen-ji, whose temple buildings are gassho-built too, and the Gassho-zukuri Minkaen of relocated houses are one-star. The winter evening illuminations are reservation-only.

Shirakawa-go is a village people still live in. Most of the gassho houses are private homes: stay out of gardens and fields, do not look into doorways or windows, and do not fly drones without permission. The Takayama Jinya, Hida-no-Sato — and the three-star museum that closed

Two-star in the 2015 edition, the Takayama Jinya was the office from which the Tokugawa shogunate governed Hida — the only such building in the country to survive. You walk through the officials’ rooms, the interrogation court and the rice-tax storehouses. Hida-no-Sato, on the hill west of town, is two-star as well: an open-air museum of gassho houses and other old farmhouses relocated from across Hida and set around a pond. If Shirakawa-go will not fit your schedule, this is where you can look inside a gassho house at your own pace.

The Hida Takayama Museum of Art, three-star in the 2015 edition for its Art Nouveau glass and furniture, closed in May 2020. A members-only hotel now stands on the site and the collection has passed to an exhibition space attached to it. Guidebooks and older travel articles still list it — it is not open to general visitors.

Oku-Hida — Shinhotaka Onsen and the Nishihotakaguchi deck

About 90 minutes by bus from Takayama, in Oku-Hida, Shinhotaka Onsen and the Nishihotakaguchi observation deck at the top of the Shinhotaka Ropeway are two-star in the 2015 edition. The ropeway’s second stage uses double-decker gondolas, and from the deck at 2,156 m the Northern Alps — Yarigatake, the Hotaka range — stand close enough to read.

It is cold up there even in summer and the weather turns fast. Take a jacket, and do not continue onto the mountain trails beyond the deck without proper equipment. Clear mornings give the best visibility. Some tours combine it with Kamikochi on the Nagano side.

Getting to Hida-Takayama, and model routes

Takayama is about two and a half hours from Nagoya on the Hida limited express, and about an hour and a half from Toyama. From Tokyo, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya or the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama and change to the Hida. The Hida limited express is covered by the Japan Rail Pass. For Shirakawa-go, take the highway bus from Takayama or Kanazawa; many services are reservation-only, so book seats early.
